RS&H is seeking a Senior Roadway Engineer to serve as a technical leader in our Transportation Group in either Charleston or Columbia, South Carolina.

About the Role:

As a Senior Roadway Engineer, you will take on a key role providing high-level technical expertise for roadway and highway design projects across South Carolina. This role is ideal for an engineer who is passionate about design excellence and wants to focus on delivering high-quality engineering solutions without the distractions of project management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead roadway and highway design efforts, including geometric design, alignments, typical sections, roadside safety, and maintenance of traffic (MOT) plans.
  • Serve as a technical resource and subject matter expert, providing guidance on design standards, innovative solutions, and best practices.
  • Perform quality control reviews and ensure technical accuracy, constructability, and adherence to SCDOT and regulatory requirements.
  • Mentor and support junior and mid-level engineers, providing technical coaching and design review to build team capabilities.
  • Coordinate closely with multidiscipline teams, including drainage, traffic, and structural engineers, to ensure integrated design solutions.
  • Participate in field reviews, design charrettes, and technical discussions with clients and internal teams to solve complex design challenges.
  • Stay current on SCDOT, FHWA, and AASHTO design guidelines, contributing to the technical growth of the team.

Why This Role?

  • Be part of a rapidly growing team that is expanding its footprint across South Carolina — a unique opportunity to get in on the ground floor and help shape the future of our Transportation practice.
  • Take on challenging and high-profile projects that make a direct impact on communities throughout the state.
  • Influence the technical direction of our roadway engineering practice and play a key role in advancing our design standards and approach.
  • Collaborate on workshare initiatives across multiple regions — as we grow nationwide, you’ll have opportunities to contribute to diverse and exciting projects that span local, regional, and national markets.
  • Join a team that values technical expertise and innovation, with opportunities to mentor and guide junior engineers as we continue to grow.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in South Carolina.
  • 7+ years of roadway engineering experience with an emphasis on technical design.
  • Proficiency in MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer and/or Civil3D
  • Strong understanding of SCDOT and AASHTO roadway design standards.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills, with a focus on mentorship and technical leadership.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with design-build and alternative delivery projects.
  • Proficiency with Bluebeam Revu and ProjectWise.
  • Involvement in professional organizations such as ASCE, ACEC, or ITE is encouraged.
