The Opportunity

RS&H is currently looking for a construction inspector to join our team in Austin, TX. You will be outside in the elements - rain or shine – coordinating with contractors and sub-contractors on active heavy civil transportation construction sites. You will monitor progress as well as inspect materials to ensure compliance with plans and specifications, review contract documents to ensure compliance, and you may perform sampling and field testing of component materials and completed work. At the end of every day, you’ll create a daily log of everything that happened to report these details to our client.

Requirements

Here’s what you need to be successful:

  • You have a high school diploma or equivalent and six months of experience. You don’t need a particular degree or extensive experience in heavy civil transportation construction. We can teach you most of what you need to know, but you must be able to read construction plans and obtain any materials sampling and testing certifications, as required by the project's scope of work. Additionally, you will need a valid driver's license with a good driving record, as you will be assigned a company truck.
  • You enjoy working with people. You'll work alone some days, but other days, you’ll talk to clients, contractors, and subcontractors throughout your day. You’ll earn trust by effectively communicating details and confidently reporting test results or findings.
  • You like variety. You want to work outside and easily adapt to different situations. You’ll oversee your assigned project from start to finish, rain or shine, in the sun or snow, and often in unpredictable weather conditions. You like a job where you will be physically active and don’t mind getting your boots dirty. You could be working a day or night shift on a rural highway project or a construction site in a more urban area.
  • You are flexible. Some days, your office will be your assigned company truck and others, you’ll be working from the project site trailer.
  • You pay close attention to detail, especially numbers. You’ll take measurements and complete calculations to ensure that specifications are followed. You notice details that must be addressed, like when a truck arrives with unapproved or unacceptable materials or when plans or specifications aren’t followed. You will methodically record these details in a daily log, which becomes part of the client’s project records. You’re someone who triple-checks your work.
  • You like to learn. We’ll first provide training and onsite supervision to help you feel confident on your own. Then, you will take additional training and certification classes as you grow in your role.

**Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship or visa transfer.**
